Can we force fate by being at the right place, at the right time for the right opportunity?
Are you tired of being out every night “networking”? Tonight for one of the first times I declined an invitation to yet another networking event.  Don’t get me wrong when I say “yet another networking event” as I value networking events greatly.  I appreciate the inspirational people who invite me to such events as well as those who I meet by attending because information and different people equates to personal and professional growth.  However, I think I may finally be growing up as I am starting to really consider and focus my direction and networking approach as well as my WHY!.  The search for my why came as a result of a Brisbane Junior Chamber of Commerce Young Leaders Forum networking event earlier this year but that is another topic for another day. I am now leaning towards a more focused approach to my choice in networking events and future career path.  I need to be clear on the reason for my existence, how I can contribute best to the group hosting the networking event, who the speaker is and what value they will add to my life as well as those around me.  Also worth considering is who else will be at the event who I would like to meet and can add value to their lives. This change of approach was inspired by an excellent “networking event” I attended on Monday night with guest speaker, Daniel Merza as part of the different thinking for different results network.  Daniel spoke of the importance of focus, goal setting and the dreaded five year plan which has mixed ideas about its worth.  Sitting in the audience though reflecting on his nuggets of gold, I thought to myself (in fact I have known for a while) Christie you should be further ahead at this stage in your life, why aren’t you and what is holding you back?  I have the drive, I have a range of experiences, I am well educated, I am creative with different ideas and a good network including family and friends who love me.  I have built my community and am starting to identify my strengths, passion points and direction but why aren’t I completely contended and flourishing? It is quite simple – I have not completed a 5 year plan (or any plan at all really), I have never had a clear focus or a direction so how can I possibly reach my destination if I have no idea where I am going? I have been really busy trying a plethora of jobs, industries, networks, places across Australia and overseas in search for my purpose, my niche, my thing.  While it’s good to experience variety, I have not been focused with a clear goal in mind to work towards and mainly because I have had no idea what that is.  I write this as it may benefit you also.  I need to take time out of my scattered approach to my life and career and ask myself – what am I really good at, what brings joy to my life, what would I do if I did not have to worry about money, where can I contribute best to the greater good and what events and information will help me get there?  Bottom line, I need to be clear on my focus and direction to really achieve. With a clear focus, I can attend the right networking events with purpose and direction and I can enjoy every one of them whilst still maintaining a balance in life through work, networking and play. If you also are tired of networking but value networking so dearly like me, maybe we can work together to develop a clear vision for our lives, a clear plan with the destination in place.  We can then drop in on the right events and meet the right people along the way to ensure we create our own fate and be at the right place, at the right time for the right opportunity.
